How To Make 4th of July Craft Fireworks:

First gather up all your empty toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes.  These will make the body of your “fireworks rockets” and if you have both sizes it will provide for variety but it is not necessary.

Grab your paints and go to work decorating your firework body.  You can be as creative as you like and use any colors or patterns as you like. Because this is a 4th of July craft, I chose to stick to red, white, and blue with stars and stripe patterns for the American flags theme. You can create each one to look the same or you can go for variety. Once this is done, set them aside to dry.  Drying acrylic paint shouldn’t take too long- about 10 minutes.

While the tubes are drying, you can go ahead and draw circles on your papers and cut them out. You can use a protractor or find a round object to trace such as an oatmeal canister.  The circles should be about 6 inches in diameter. Save your paper scraps, you may want to use them in a few minutes.

The circles will become the rocket body’s lid or pointy top so you will need one circle for each rocket you want to make. Once you have the circles cut out, you can paint them. I again stuck to red, white, and blue with stars and stripe patterns. Allow these to dry. Or you can use colored construction paper if a solid color works for you.

Next you will take a circle and make the pointy top holding your fingers a couple inches apart on the circle and pushing them toward each other. The extra paper will gather underneath and you will fold that over and tape or glue it down to make it disappear from sight.

Then when your lid is ready you can use the hot glue to attach it to the paper tube. Now you have firework rockets in their most basic form. Next, add some crepe paper streamers or glitter for an extra special touch. You can stop here and let the kids use the fireworks crafts as toys and play with them or you can keep going with the following steps to use them as decor.

Turn Them Into Bottle Rockets Decor

SAFETY: You will be attaching the bamboo skewers to your fireworks craft in this step. After doing this, you will not want them to be used as toys because the sharp end could be dangerous for children. Make sure that is clear to young children and place them out of reach on a bookshelf or fireplace mantle.

Glue the blunt end of the skewer to the top area inside of the paper tube. Hot glue works well for this.  Use the extra paper scraps from the previous steps to wad them up and stick inside the paper tubes. This fills up the space a bit and supports the skewers staying in place.

Now, to add that extra touch to your firework rockets decor, you can choose to add red streamers, blue ribbon, or tinsel coming out of the back end of the rocket.  Just glue either of those on the inside bottom of the paper tube.

Now, you can place the sharp end of the firework rockets skewer into the ground outside to line your walkway. Or you can place your bottle rocket craft into mason jars or bottles to use as inside decor. Another option is to place a few on your front door festive wreath. Let your imagination take flight as you create a dazzling display with your DIY TP rockets.
