Tyowua Maureen Doofan, a Benue woman, has denounced the reduction of the bride price to N100,000 by Paramount Ruler of the Tiv nation, Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse. The monarch’s announcement was intended to promote marriage among young adults.
Tor Tiv stated that the giving of itemized lists for traditional marriages is a foreign practice that has been abolished by The Tiv Traditional Area Council (IJIR TAMEN). He declared that a man only requires N100,000, three elders as witnesses, and parental consent for marriage.
Responding to the announcement, Tyowua challenged any man to approach her father’s house with the reduced bride price. She also questioned Tor Tiv’s involvement, asking if he had funded her and her sisters’ education. Tyowua later retracted her post due to backlash. CONTINUE READING
