Nigerians have expressed outrage over the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) inaction against the Olu of Owode, Oba Kolawole Sowemimo, who was caught on video using naira notes to create flower garlands.

Despite the EFCC’s previous announcement that it would prosecute individuals abusing the naira, the agency has yet to take action against the monarch. This has sparked accusations of selective prosecution, as the EFCC has recently arrested celebrities for similar offenses.

In April 2024, crossdresser Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison for spraying naira at a movie premiere. Days later, businessman Cubana Chiefpriest was fined N10 million for similar actions.

Nigerians have taken to social media to demand that the EFCC treat the monarch with the same severity as it has celebrities. They argue that the monarch’s actions were a blatant violation of the law and should not be overlooked.

One user, @chinasaawo, commented, “EFCC has suddenly gone blind.” Another, @Oforma19, stated, “Clearly, our judiciary has been bought.”

The EFCC has not yet commented on the video of the monarch, while the Egba traditional council has suspended him for two months without salary. CONTINUE READING

    Another wahala coming. Anyways, he’s not above the law, the law is the law and it’s going to continue this way in-shaa-Allah. We need to take somethings serious in this country and we need to start somewhere.
