The Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has urged former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to cooperate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and submit for investigation.

The AGF expressed concern over the recent “dramas and hide and seek game” between the EFCC and Bello, who is wanted for questioning over alleged corrupt practices. He emphasized that the EFCC has legal authority to summon individuals for interrogation regardless of their status.

Fagbemi described the actions of incumbent Governor Ahmed Ododo, who allegedly used his immunity to prevent Bello’s arrest, as “disquieting.” He stressed that resorting to self-help and avoidance tactics undermines the rule of law and tarnishes Nigeria’s reputation.

The AGF reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all Nigerians. However, he emphasized that state institutions must be allowed to function effectively without obstruction.

Fagbemi urged Bello to “immediately toe the path of decency and civility” by cooperating with the EFCC. He warned that evading the law only exacerbates the situation and damages the country’s image.

“Nigeria has a vibrant judicial system that is capable of protecting everyone who follows the rule of law in seeking protection,” Fagbemi stated. “Therefore, I encourage anyone who has been invited by the EFCC or any other agency to honor such invitation instead of embarking on self-help and escapism.” CONTINUE READING
