It’s been six years since we’ve seen a new film from director S. Craig Zahler, who previously brought us Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete.
I’ve enjoyed his films and I think he’s a great and talented director. It’s a shame that we haven’t seen him make anything in a while, but he’s got a couple of projects lined up!
The filmmaker offered an update on his blog, saying: “A number of articles have announced The Big Stone Grid as my next picture, which is not quite correct.”
Zahler added: “I am sending that script around as a possible fifth movie, but I’ve made far more progress with another different original project to direct for my fourth one: I am negotiating deals to see if it will become a reality.”
He went on to say: “I will give more information about this when things are more certain. Continue to look here for my next movie announcement.”
So, The Big Stone Grid, is still in play, and we do know a little bit about that one. It’s a crime drama that Zahler initially sold to Sony Pictures back in the early 2010s with Michael Mann originally attached to direct.
After Mann went on to direct Blackhat instead, Pierre Morel (Taken) was attached briefly, but now the rights to the film are back with Zahler.
The movie is described as “a hard-edged thriller in the vein of Seven and Marathon Man.” It follows “two decorated detectives who uncover a terrifying extortion ring that operates within the secret underbelly of New York City.”
It’ll be interesting to see what this next film of his ends up being. He was developing another western at one point, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
