According to the 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices released by the US, Nigeria’s presidential election generally reflected the will of voters, despite irregularities. However, the report notes specific instances of voter intimidation and suppression by supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Igbo-dominated areas of Lagos during the gubernatorial election in March.

The report, published by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour of the US Department of State, highlights that many observers deemed the elections to be a fair representation of voter preferences, despite reports of voter suppression, vote buying, and other irregularities.

In the Lagos gubernatorial election, APC supporters allegedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas, where Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, had won in the national election. Social media videos captured APC supporters threatening Igbo voters and attacking journalists in Ojo and Eti-Osa. Police officers reportedly failed to intervene during these incidents.

Regarding corruption, the report highlights the appointment of former Governor Abubakar Bagudu as Minister of Budget, despite his alleged involvement in financial scandals during the Abacha regime.
