A dam burst near the town of Mai Mahiu in Kenya, killing at least 42 people, according to Governor Susan Kihika of Nakuru County.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 29, amid heavy rains and flooding that have plagued East Africa. The dam’s collapse washed away houses and severed a road.
“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud. We are working on recovery,” Kihika said.
Previously, official figures indicated that 76 people had died in Kenya since March due to the heavy rainfall, which has been exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern.
In 2018, a similar dam burst in Solai, also in Nakuru County, killed several dozen people during torrential rains and flooding. CONTINUE READING
