Mr. John Ayoh, former Director of Information Technology at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has detailed how he allegedly collected $600,000 for contract gratification on behalf of ex-CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele.

During his testimony before an Ikeja Special Offences Court, led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ayoh stated that he had received two envelopes containing cash: $400,000 at his Lekki residence and $200,000 at the CBN’s Tinubu Head Office.

Ayoh, the then Head of Procurement and Support Services (PSS) Department, explained that he was authorized to receive applications and select contract bidders. He claimed that the first envelope was delivered by Mr. John Adeola, Emefiele’s assistant, while the second was brought by an individual who requested to meet directly with Emefiele. However, Emefiele declined and instructed Ayoh to deliver it himself.

Under cross-examination, Ayoh admitted that running errands for Emefiele was not part of his official duties, but he directly reported to him. He denied being a member of the Major Contract Tender Committee (MCTC) and any involvement in criminal activities.

Ayoh claimed that he acted under duress when receiving the envelopes. The court admitted his statement into evidence, which corroborated his claims. The witness also alleged that Emefiele’s instructions indicated a disregard for established procedures.

The case was adjourned until May 3 for continued cross-examination. Emefiele’s counsel requested his release on self-recognition, which was granted by the court. The defendant is expected to meet bail conditions by May 17. CONTINUE READING
