Lagos State’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed the discovery of 86 partitioned rooms beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, Lagos Island. Measuring 10×10 and 12×10, these rooms were reportedly rented out for N250,000 per year.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Special Adviser, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, confirmed the eviction of squatters from the bridge due to illegal settlement and environmental violations. The eviction, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), resulted in the arrest of 23 individuals.
Rotimi-Akodu highlighted the presence of wood materials used in the construction of the shelters and the storage of gas cylinders and fuel by the occupants. Such conditions pose significant fire hazards and threaten the integrity of the critical infrastructure.
The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources will continue to monitor the site. Those arrested will face legal consequences, and the law will be strictly enforced to prevent further illegal settlement and environmental degradation. CONTINUE READING
