JAMES MADDISON was set to play for England against Iceland on Friday before he decided to leave the squad, according to reports.
The Tottenham playmaker, 27, became the first of Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional roster to depart the Three Lions camp on Wednesday.
Maddison came off the bench in the 61st minute of England’s 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina at St James’ Park.
His place remained uncertain due to the plethora of attacking options at Southgate’s disposal.
But The Mail are now reporting he was expected to play against Iceland in England’s final match before the Euros.
Having now left the squad, Jarrod Bowen is the front-runner to replace Maddison at Wembley.
It comes as Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has also been axed from the squad, while Reds team-mate Jarell Quansah is set to follow suit.
Maddison, Jones and Quansah make up three of the seven players Southgate will leave out of his final squad before the deadline at midnight on Friday.
Burnley keeper James Trafford is another expected to miss out as Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson tie down the spots behind No1 Jordan Pickford.
Bowen, Eberechi Eze and Jack Grealish will be boosted by Maddison’s depature.
