“I always do this exercise of simplifying and exaggerating real shapes, finding geometric shapes in nature, and playing with their proportions,” says Hugo Alberto. From his studio in Cuiabá, Brazil, Alberto illustrates soothing, stylized scenes lush with texture. Working primarily in digital mediums, he balances clean, crisp lines with stippled and mottled forms to create pieces that are both minimal and warm.
Nature is a fruitful starting point for the illustrator, and he melds dandelions gone to seed, a trailing pothos vine, and a dove taking flight with human elements like a curvy chair or open hands. “To tell a story with a few elements, creating a visual metaphor in a made-up world without commitment to reality, and giving dimensions to feelings are what gives me joy in this career as an illustrator,” he adds.
Alberto recently collaborated with Blue Q on a tote bag and is represented by OIO Agency. Find more of his work on Instagram.
