Father Spitzer’s new book delivers comprehensive scientific evidence for Catholicism
SAN FRANCISCO — At a time when truth is ever harder to distinguish from lies, Father Robert Spitzer, S.J. takes his mastery of the inextricable ties between science and faith to a new level in his new book, CHRIST, SCIENCE, AND REASON: WHAT WE CAN KNOW ABOUT JESUS, MARY, AND MIRACLES (Ignatius Press), which lays out scientific evidence for Christ as well as affirms the inexplicable miracles at major faith sites around the world such as Fatima, Lourdes, and the basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
CHRIST, SCIENCE, AND REASON is currently the only volume that comprehensively presents the scientific evidence in support of Jesus, the Eucharist and Mary.
Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. is the president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith and the Spitzer Center. He was the president of Gonzaga University from 1998 to 2009. He is the author of many books, including Healing the Culture, Finding True Happiness, Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life, The Light Shines on in the Darkness, The Soul’s Upward Yearning, and God So Loved the World.
Scientific tools have advanced significantly in the last three decades and CHRIST, SCIENCE, AND REASON summarizes the findings of these more advanced studies of the tilma at Guadalupe, the Shroud of Turin, Marian miracles, and Eucharistic miracles. There is no book as thorough in its treatment of these miracles from a scientific perspective. And the section on Eucharistic miracles is ideal for those who are looking to delve deeper into the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist during the National Eucharistic Revival.
CHRIST, SCIENCE, AND REASON also points out that the Catholic Church is one of the most scientifically aligned faiths in the world, turning on its head the adage that the Church is anti-science. Father Spitzer conclusively reveals the truth is quite the opposite.
“The deep foundations of the Church’s moral teachings are philosophical and theological, but in an age in thrall to scientism, it is not only useful but imperative to show that those teachings are also well-supported by social-scientific and other empirical considerations,” said Edward Feser, professor of Philosophy at Pasadena City College and author of Five Proofs of the Existence of God. “Father Robert Spitzer’s work is an important and welcome contribution to this enterprise.”
