In Chosen Family, Heather Graham takes on the triple role of writer, director, and star, crafting a heartfelt comedy about the challenges of family dynamics, relationships, and personal growth. The film follows Graham’s Ann, a yoga teacher struggling to find inner peace amid her chaotic family life and disastrous dating experiences. Graham, along with co-stars Julia Stiles and Thomas Lennon, spoke with Kyle Meredith about their roles and the process of making the film. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Stiles, who plays Anne’s troubled sister, delivers a powerful performance as a recovering addict with deep anger issues. The 10 Things I Hate About You actor expressed how much she enjoyed the catharsis of playing such a volatile character. “It’s fun to act like a grown-up who behaves like a toddler,” she said, noting that the role allowed her to explore emotions not often tapped into in real life. Stiles also reflected on working with Graham, especially as both women have recently ventured into directing (Stiles’ Wish You Were Here is currently in post production), and how they supported each other through the challenges of independent filmmaking.
Reno 9-1-1 alum Lennon, who portrays one of Ann’s best friends in Chosen Family, offered insight into his own philosophy on creating opportunities in Hollywood. “Waiting for permission from somebody is not something I’m big on,” he said, echoing Graham’s approach to forging her own path in the industry.
The chemistry between the cast is undeniable, with Graham admitting her nerves about the more outlandish scenes: “I thought, ‘Is this too ridiculous?’ But I also thought it could be the funniest scene in the movie.” Through the chaos of dating, setting boundaries, and finding love, the film leaves us with a reminder that sometimes, it’s okay to laugh at life’s messiest moments.
