Amidst the ongoing fuel crisis that has gripped Nigeria, citizens have unearthed a poignant 30-year-old video depicting a woman lamenting the same plight.

The video, reported to be from April 30, 1994, showcases the arduous struggle Nigerians faced at gas stations, enduring interminable queues and voicing their frustration over fuel scarcity. Shared by Twitter user @JWEZEE, the video features an accompanying post that reads, “On this day April 30, 1994, same day same time, only difference 30 years ago. Nigerians in long fuel queues lamenting, 30 years later they are still lamenting. And In another 30 years will still lament, why? Because patterns don’t lie.”

In the video, the woman can be heard expressing her anger at the preferential treatment given to soldiers, who would bypass queues to purchase fuel and resell it at exorbitant prices to those waiting patiently. “You have the soldiers that come, they buy petrol, they put it in jerry cans, they sell it right in front of these people, it’s ridiculous,” she exclaimed. “They get the fuel themselves, why do they have to come here, they don’t join the queue, they just buy and they sell right in front of people, it’s ridiculous. Something has to happen.”

The 1994 video, although its authenticity has not been independently verified, mirrors the current mood of the nation, which is grappling with a severe fuel shortage and price hike. In many cities, the cost of fuel has escalated to as high as N1000 per liter, leaving citizens reeling from the impact.
