The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced that the iconic comic book character Batman will be honored during a September 26th ceremony, making him the first superhero to be given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

What began as eight stars installed on a modest stretch of sidewalk at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Gower St. in 1960 now span 1.3 miles in four directions, encompassing 2,789 stars. Batman’s will be the 2790th, and will be located on the prominent corner of Hollywood and Highland, in front of the Guinness World Records Museum.

The announcement said:

“The Dark Knight has stood as a symbol of determination, courage, and justice to generations of fans for more than 85 years. Batman is recognized across the globe thanks to his portrayal in universally beloved comics, TV shows, cartoons, and movies,” and he “has transcended his story into one of the great American myths. He is vengeance. He is the night. He is Batman.”

The Walk of Fame’s unveiling ceremonies are generally attended by famous costars and friends of the honoree. In this case that means DC’s president, publisher, and CEO, Jim Lee, and the company’s SVP and general manager, Anne DePies.

Batman’s selection for the honor is significant in two ways. For one, he becomes the first superhero to be awarded a star on the Walk of Fame, a fact to be recognized during the ceremony by Guinness World Records and reflected in his star’s placement. Secondly, he becomes only the 20th fictional character to see his name emblazoned in perpetuity on a Walk of Fame star. He will join the likes of Mickey, Minnie, Snoopy, and The Muppets.
