The crash, which occurred at about 8pm on Thursday, involved two vehicles, a blue Iveco trailer with no registration and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LSD363YE.

Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, announced this in a statement on Friday, June 14.

Ogungbemide said preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occured as a result of excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.

He said: “A total of 25 people were involved, comprising 13 male adults, five female adults, two female children and five male children. From this number, five people were injured (three male adults and two female adults), and 19 victims killed (11 male adults, three female adults, three male children, and two female children.

“The injured victims have been rescued to Orisun Ayo hospital.One corpse was deposited at the morgue of the same hospital while the remaining 18 dead bodies were claimed by the families of the deceased.”

Ogungbemide said the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, had expressed “displeasure over the alarming rate of recklessness of drivers who have continued to contravene established traffic regulations and causing undue harm to lives and unprecedented destruction to properties.”

“In line with his 2024 agenda for drastic reduction in road carnage’s, the Corps Marshal has directed Commanding Officers to intensify special patrol operations against these identified violations,” he added.
