Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has announced that the first and third Fridays of each month will be designated as “Farm Days” to promote agricultural activities among workers.

During the 2024 May Day celebration, Eno emphasized his administration’s commitment to workers’ well-being, saying, “We have prioritized the welfare of our workers since assuming office.”

Eno revealed that his administration has released N16.1 billion for gratuity arrears and ordered an immediate release of N2 billion, totaling N18.1 billion in gratuity payments.

Expressing gratitude to organized labor, Eno acknowledged their support during the elections and highlighted achievements such as:

* Disbursement of N16.1 billion in gratuities
* Refund of outstanding contributory pension schemes
* Investment in workers’ housing

Regarding the minimum wage, Eno stated that the state would implement the new wage after receiving details from the federal government. He emphasized the importance of agriculture for long-term sustainability, saying, “The Bulk Purchase Agency is a short-term solution.”

To encourage farming, Eno declared that the designated Farm Days will be monitored for participation. He emphasized that these days are not to be used for funerals. CONTINUE READING
