The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has officially addressed the recent earth tremors felt in various parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), assuring residents that the tremors pose no significant threat. In a statement released on Wednesday, the NGSA’s Director-General, Professor Olusegun Ige, revealed that the agency has been closely monitoring the tremors since September 13, 2024, when the first tremor was recorded.

According to Professor Ige, 48 distinct earthquake events were observed between September 13 and 16, with their intensity and frequency increasing over the period. Preliminary findings show that the source of the tremors is less than 5 kilometers from the NGSA-5 Seismic Station. Most of the tremor epicenters were identified northeast of the station around the Mpape axis, while some were located southwest around Katampe.

“These tremors are a result of accumulated stress along identified faults, releasing seismic energy,” explained Ige, noting that the intensity of the tremors ranged from III to IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, classifying them as weak to light events….[CONTINUE READING HERE ▶▶]

The NGSA has assured the public that these tremors pose a very low-level threat, advising residents of affected areas, including Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama, not to panic as the situation is being closely monitored.
