Caribou has shared a new song, “Volume,” which reworks the 1987 hit “Pump Up the Volume”. The M|A|R|R|S original marked Dan Snaith’s first experience with electronic music (note the press shot taken from the period). Watch the era-appropriate video, directed by Richard Kenworthy of Shynola, below.
In a press release, Dan Snaith explained, “‘Pump Up the Volume’ was the first time in my life I heard electronic music—sitting in front of the family stereo system listening to the top 40 countdown on the radio when I was a kid. It completely blew my mind—it sounded like something from another world. It’s stuck with me ever since—I always wanted to rework it in some way. I didn’t consciously think about it when I started working on my track but I think there’s something really special about having gone right back to the very beginning in making this.”
The single follows of trickle of Caribou releases since his 2020 album Suddenly, including April’s “Honey” and last month’s “Broke My Heart”—which came with a tour announcement—as well as a remix of Ahadadream’s “Taka.”
