Washington D.C., USA – July 26, 2016: Delta Airlines jet takes off as an American Airlines planes taxis out for an early morning departure from Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C.

Travelers flying through Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta have the most total air access among North American airports, but U.S. flyers who want the most choice for international flights will want to go through John F. Kennedy Airport or Miami Airport.

While North American airports offer flyers direct access to some of the most popular global destinations, the busiest airports don’t necessarily offer the best global connectivity.

A recent study by aviation analytics firm Cirium discovered while airports in Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta serve the most total destinations, international travelers may be best served transiting through Toronto, New York, or Miami.

JFK and Miami Offers Service to Most International Destinations in the U.S.

In North America, Cirium found Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) offers the most connections with a total of 270, consisting of 195 domestic destinations and 75 international cities. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) came in second, serving nine fewer cities than O’Hare. Despite being one of the busiest airports in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) was rated the third most connected airport in North America with service to 237 destinations.

When it comes to total international service, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) takes the top spot in North America, while being rated the fifth most connected airport on the continent. The airport offers flights to 168 international cities – many to the United States – and 34 destinations within Canada.

For U.S. flyers looking for the most choices for international service, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Miami International Airport (MIA) offer the most connections. Flyers can get service to 123 international destinations out of JFK, while those traveling through Miami can fly direct to 110 international cities.

At the bottom end of the top 20 airports, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) were tied for serving the fewest destinations, each only having direct connections to 145 cities. Between them, Boston offers five more international destinations compared to San Francisco. Rounding out the bottom is a three-way tie between is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) with 150 connections.

Cirium says the world’s best connected airport is Istanbul Airport (IST).
