Last week I added this beautiful statement rug and swapped out chair legs in our bedroom!
And to think this spring I said I had no plans to work on this room over the summer! I was only going to work on the deck!
Now I’m decorating the bedroom.
I always reserve the right to change my mind :).
That’s how inspiration works, you have to stay open and flexible. You never know what will inspire you or when an idea will strike!
What’s that saying? If you give a mouse a cookie? Oh yes, I love cookies.

Decorating gets more fun once you have statement pieces!
You’ll find my thoughts on the new rug, some decorating tips and what’s I’m looking for next, below!
Our new bed brought a whimsical, fresh, happy coastal cottage vibe to the room, which I love, so I feel like the rug is the perfect pairing.
I really wasn’t sure when I ordered it if I would keep the rug in here or if I would want it in another room, but I’ve really fallen in love with it here.
It even has COASTAL BIRDS!
The minute I saw them in the rug pattern, I knew.
We need to paint our room so we will probably rearrange the art then, too, but as you can see, I love these birds and that will never change. 🙂
I always think a room should tell stories and reflect your personality or things you love, so don’t forget or hesitate to bring in what sparks joy.
Do you make up stories about art in your home? Just me?
We have real herons down by the water so I always smile when I see these guys, thinking they are heading that way to join their friends LOL.
Here are a few tips and thoughts on decorating ….
A beautiful rug or any colorful statement piece you love can be a wonderful jumping off point for a color palette and other decorating decisions, too.
It’s okay to try different combinations and take your time to figure out what works best for you.
I really love the pattern and colors of this rug. It can be hard to see the exact tones since photos, computers, phones and other screens can alter colors, but I love the shades of blue (I’d say it is like a denim blue?) browns, yellow/golds and even a little pinch of mauve/pink.
The colors in this rug would be beautiful with my dining room rug, too, so if I change my mind about keeping it here, I can also picture it in the living room on top of the cotton jute rug we have right now.
Even though it’s a statement rug, it coordinates with other rugs I have so that makes it flexible, too!
It will be interesting to try various bedding combinations with the rug. I will share as I figure out what I want to do.
It’s tempting to “play it safe” but when you love something special, going for it can really make the room!
A simple change to refresh the look of a chair
Once the rug was in place, I remembered another change I wanted to make. Months ago I had bought new chair legs. We got this chair probably about 8 or 9 years ago. I had replaced legs like this on our leather ottoman many years ago and loved the change. It was so simple to change the legs and give it this chair an instantly fresher vibe that suits our room, too!
Curtain panels
We bought these checked curtains (chambray color) and rods a couple of years ago and still love them! The curtains were affordable enough that I feel the freedom to change them anytime I want a new look, too. I love the rods too!
We need new shades on our French doors, so I will be on the lookout for the right ones.
Furniture and lamps.
We almost moved this chair downstairs a couple of months ago but then I didn’t have the heart to. Our pup Lily LOVES this chair here! She often sleeps on it at night.
I always move furniture though and she adapts just fine, so we’ll see. All she cares about is being cozy and she can find cozy spots no matter what.
The wood bead ceiling light fixture was installed recently and we still love that here.
I know I also want to figure out lamps and a floor lamp, so I’ll be thinking about what we have room for!
Changes can be made over time.
We brought this white bookcase here from our last house, we could paint it whatever color we want! Or leave it as it is. Our walls need to be painted, but that’s another update I’m sure we’ll make in time. I will be on the lookout for nightstands and possibly a new dresser, but I will leave some of these options and decisions for if/when I find the right thing! I don’t like to rush.
We are loving having this deck right outside our room.
You can see our outdoor rug and new deck furniture in THIS POST.
Remember a few years back when I was sharing my dream to renovate our son’s old room in our last house? I wanted to make it a small primary bedroom and add French doors to a small patio.
As I’ve been working on this room and deck the past week or so, that memory keeps coming back to my mind.
When we moved here, this room became that dream come true!
We are so grateful to have this room as our sanctuary, just like the one I wanted, but even better.
