Eddie Vedder has called Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker a “fucking pussy” after the NFL player stated his belief that women are better off staying at home rather than pursuing a career.
The Pearl Jam singer made a lengthy speech during his band’s concert in Las Vegas on Saturday (May 18th) in response to Butker’s now-infamous commencement address at Benedictine College last weekend. Beginning his comments, Vedder praised Pearl Jam’s opening act Deep Sea Diver.

“The singer, Jessica, and the keyboard player, Patti, they must not have believed that ‘diabolical lie’ that women should take pride in taking a backseat to their man,” Vedder said, quoting a phrase from Butker’s speech.
He continued by saying that “there should be pride in homemaking if you’re a man or a woman” — which he described as “one of the hardest jobs” — before questioning “the logic” in Butker’s statement.
Then, Vedder pointed out the irony of a kicker who “doesn’t have the pads because he doesn’t tackle anybody or get tackled” telling men not to lose their masculinity. “The irony was that when he was saying that, he looked like such a fucking pussy,” he said. “There’s nothing more masculine than a strong man supporting a strong woman.”
Speaking of irony, Butker quoted Taylor Swift during his speech, in which he told men to “be unapologetic in your masculinity” and advised women to ignore the “diabolical lies” they’ve been told.
“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” Butker said, before using his wife as an example. “Isabelle’s dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you ask her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud without hesitation, and say, ‘Heck no.’”
