Podar Yiljwan Johnson, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, has stated that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is within his constitutional rights to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general election.
El-Rufai recently returned to the political scene after a brief hiatus, during which he launched a $100 million business venture. Speculation has been rife that he is considering a presidential bid in 2027, following his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 election.
However, El-Rufai’s recent fallout with Tinubu over a ministerial appointment controversy has fueled rumors that he may join the growing list of powerful politicians potentially opposing the president’s re-election bid in 2027. This speculation has been further fueled by his meetings with top political figures.
Despite these rumors, El-Rufai has yet to formally declare his candidacy or address reports of a potential defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of 2027.
Speaking exclusively to Legit.ng on the matter, Comrade Johnson said, “El-Rufai is a Nigerian and has the right to exercise his constitutional right to contest. It is now up to Nigerians to evaluate his past and present conduct and decide accordingly.”
“I believe that in 2027, Nigerians will not cast their votes based on religious affiliation but rather on character and policies that will lead to a brighter future,” Johnson added. CONTINUE READING
