He had spoken to popstar Camila Cabello and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff’s wife Suzie when he switched his attention to the motors.

Sky Sports star Brundle, 64, was examining the back of Lewis Hamilton’s Merc, which was starting in eighth, when the hilarious moment occurred.

“These are the lights that you see flashing,” before he was suddenly jumping backwards.

He managed to avoid the car backfiring and started to laugh nervously.

The ever-professional Brundle said: “That just backfired and nearly took me away.

“These are the lights flashing when they’re harvesting or in the rain. Luckily that hit me on the knee and not anywhere else, that Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.”

A backfire is a combustion produced by a running internal combustion engine that occurs in the exhaust system, rather than inside the combustion chamber.

It makes an explosion sound noise – but fortunately for everyone the star escaped unscathed.

And those viewers watching at home soon took to social media.

“Brundle’s reflexes are still sharp, dodged that backfire like a pro,” commented one.

Another said: “That’s the funniest grid walk moment ever.”

A third said: “Bit of a jump scare for Martin.”

“Absolutely EPIC gridwalk this was,” added another fan.

It comes just months after F1 viewers told Brundle to “never change” after a run-in with a security guard at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year.

The Sky Sports reporter is given the tough task of chasing celebrities around the track prior to the race.

Brundle has become a master of pushing his way to the front over the years.

That has secured him brilliant chats with the likes of David Beckham, Ed Sheeran, Will Smith and Kylie Minogue to name a few.

However, the broadcasting legend does not always get so lucky.

Occasionally he has to do the walk of shame away from a star if they snub his interview attempt.

That has led to a host of uncomfortable moments with celebrities over the years on the grid.
