As Joker: Folie à Deux plays in theaters, director Todd Phillips has commented on his future with the DC movies.

During the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Phillips confirmed that the Joker sequel brings an end to his time playing in the DC Universe sandbox.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “My time in the DC Universe was these two films. It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies.” He has explained they have “said what [they] wanted to say in this world,” so their story is complete.

Joker: Folie à Deux is going to end up having a disappointing opening box office weekend and the reviews and reactions for the film have not been good.

Joker was just one of those films that didn’t need a sequel. Phillips initially never planned to make a sequel but after the movie made over a billion dollars at the box office, the studio pushed for a sequel and offered a dump truck full of money to the filmmaker and talent to make it happen.

After this weekend, the studio execs that pushed for the movie are sure to be kicking themselves in the ass. I think most fans could see that this sequel wasn’t going to work the way the studios hoped it would.

The movie was directed by Todd Phillips and it also stars Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Brendan Gleeson who will be playing undisclosed characters.
