During the first half they watched the Hatters concede a penalty, when Teden Mengi was penalised for wrestling with Jarrad Branthwaite as a corner was swung in.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin subsequently made no mistake, putting the Toffees ahead from the spot on 24 minutes.

After the game, Carragher and Neville demonstrated where Mengi had gone wrong.

The former, 46, said: “I’ve always said this about holding shirts, you’ve got to know when to let go.

“You can have a little bit of a jostle, a little bit of holding here and there but there’s a time and a place where you think, ‘I’ve held on for too long now.’

“You can probably get away with a second but you’ve got to let go, and he just doesn’t let go and this day and age, you’re not going to get away with it.”

Neville, 48, then continued: “The element of surprise as a defender is that you look like you’re not marking him. Just as the ball is about to be kicked, if I’m marking him, you do that…”

At this point, he demonstrated by putting his arm into Carragher.

The Manchester United legend then laughed as he said: “He’s not happy now.”

Neville then went on: “You make sure just before the ball comes in, you do that.”

At this point, he cheekily shoved Carra off screen.

Not taking this treatment lying down, Carragher smiled mischievously as he returned, giving Neville a shove back.

Presenter Kelly Cates laughed as she said: “Oi careful, don’t get me involved in this!”

Once the shoving match was over, Neville continued: “You can’t do that, that’s just not a movement that any defender does so he’s a little bit naive, a lot naive there.

“Look it happens, but that’s not a movement a defender or a motion a defender should do.”

Everton’s lead did not last, with Luton forward Elijah Adebayo scoring a brilliant equaliser on 31 minutes.

The physical contest went on to finish 1-1, leaving Luton still in the bottom three with two games remaining.

After the game, Hatters boss Rob Edwards echoed Neville and Carragher’s sentiments when it came to the penalty conceded by his side.

He said: “We don’t have too many complaints.

“Teden is going to have a fantastic career. It’s a learning experience for him. He held him for a bit too long.”
