Janet Jackson has falsely suggested that Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is not Black.
In a new interview with the Guardian, Jackson was asked about the upcoming election and the possibility of America electing its first Black female president. The singer responded by bizarrely questioning Harris race. “Well, you know what they supposedly said? The’s she’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian,” Jackson said.
“Her father’s white. That’s what I was told,” Jackson continued. “I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
To be clear, Harris is biracial. Her father was born in Jamaica and her mother was born in India. However, amid the presidential election, Donald Trump and other Republicans have made false claims about her ethnicity and background.
After being corrected by the Guardian, Jackson was again asked whether America was ready for a Black female president. “I don’t know,” she responded. “Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”
