Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has announced plans for members of the constitution review committees in the Senate and House to engage with President Bola Tinubu on various issues related to the review process.
Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, emphasized the importance of collaboration among consultants and the secretariats of the committees. He believes that this will ensure an efficient and successful review process.
Kalu urged the stakeholders to examine previous amendment proposals that were rejected or not assented to by the President. He suggested that they consider reintroducing these issues and developing strategies to address the concerns that led to their rejection.
He stressed that constitutional alteration is an ongoing process that requires the input of all Nigerians. He hopes that the legislature can develop a constitution that tackles long-standing contentious issues such as state police and special seats for women.
Kalu praised the efforts of stakeholders involved in the constitutional review, acknowledging the “national sacrifice” and patriotism they have demonstrated. He believes that the 10th Assembly is building on the work of previous assemblies and will ensure that the results of the review process meet the aspirations of Nigerians. CONTINUE READING
