The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has retracted its previous criticism of President Bola Tinubu, acknowledging the significant achievements and appointments made by his administration in the northern region.

The retraction came after Dr. Josef Onoh, a prominent supporter of Tinubu, publicly listed the president’s accomplishments, highlighting the elevation of northern individuals to key positions. Onoh also condemned the NEF’s opposition to Tinubu’s second term, arguing that it hindered the development of the North.

In response, the NEF issued a statement distancing itself from the earlier criticism, clarifying that it was not an official position of the forum. The statement emphasized that NEF has not assessed Tinubu’s performance or discussed the 2027 elections.

“The NEF considers it too early to be engaged in such distractions when NEF, like most Nigerians, are demanding good governance and dividends of democracy,” the statement read.

Previously, the NEF had announced its withdrawal of support for Tinubu, citing concerns over his administration’s alleged neglect of the North. However, after Onoh’s intervention, the forum has revised its stance, acknowledging Tinubu’s contributions to the region.

Onoh, while expressing his respect for the NEF, criticized its protests against alleged cow killings in the Southeast, labeling them as baseless.

The retraction marks a significant shift in the NEF’s position, highlighting the influence of Onoh’s public advocacy for Tinubu’s achievements. It remains to be seen whether the NEF will continue to support Tinubu in the future, but its retraction suggests a willingness to acknowledge the positive impact of his administration on the North.
