What Does Cuticle Oil Do?
Cuticle oil is used to nourish and moisturize the cuticles, the thin layer of skin at the base of your nails. Here are its key benefits:
- Hydration: It keeps the cuticles and surrounding skin moisturized, preventing dryness and cracking.
- Nail Health: Promotes stronger, healthier nails by providing nutrients that support growth.
- Prevents Hangnails: Regular use helps reduce the occurrence of hangnails, which are painful and can lead to infection.
- Improves Appearance: Keeps nails and cuticles looking healthy, soft, and smooth.
- Increases Circulation: Massaging cuticle oil can improve blood circulation around the nails, encouraging growth.
This cuticle oil recipe is made from a blend of nourishing carrier oil , vitamin E, and essential oil.
Homemade Cuticle Oil Recipe:
DIY Cuticle Oil For Nail Growth Supplies Needed:
- 1 1/2 tsp Sweet Almond Oil (may substitute jojoba oil)
- 1 1/2 tsp Vitamin E Oil
- 6-8 drops of Essential Oil (lavender oil or tea tree oil)
- Rollerball Bottle (Amazon affiliate link)
I chose almond oil because it is lightweight, suitable for sensitive skin, and full of great nourishing properties to help restore brittle nails and dry cuticles. However, you could substitute coconut oil in its place for its moisturizing effect and anti-inflammatory properties if you prefer.
I chose vitamin E oil because it works to hydrate and protect nails and dry skin while helping to fight off bacteria and viruses. A good substitute for this is jojoba oil which is rich in Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids. According to Beverly Hills MD, “Jojoba seed oil’s natural anti-fungal properties make it an ideal solution for athlete’s foot and other types of nail fungus. Also deeply nourishing to nails, jojoba oil is able to repair damaged collagen matrix inside nail beds, improving strength and promoting healthy nail growth. Just a few drops every day is known to deliver results.”
I think the best oils for this simple DIY cuticle oil are the ones I mentioned above. However if you are still looking for alternative oil suggestions, I would also say that olive oil will work in place of the almond oil and castor oil will work in place of the vitamin E oil.
*Where to find the oils mentioned above: You can find Sweet Almond oil on the baking aisle at all major grocery stores. Sweet almond oil an be found at Walmart and Target as well. Vitamin E oil is found on the soap aisle at major grocery stores. You can order your YL Lavender essential oil from me because I have been using essential oils for years and I am a Young Living Distributor.
How To Make Nail Cuticle Oil:
I use a rollerball bottle because it is so easy to apply and to fit in my purse and carry anywhere. (If you have extras they also great for holding my DIY under eye firming serum.) If you prefer, you could also use an empty nail polish bottle. The brush makes it super easy to apply the natural oils to the nail plate but the tiny neck makes it hard to get the ingredients inside. Finally, you could use a small glass bottle and just apply your own natural cuticle oil with a cotton ball once you have made it.
Pop the rollerball top off of your bottle use a small funnel to pour one and a half teaspoons of Sweet Almond oil in. I like to use organic almond oil when I can. Next pour one and a half teaspoons of Vitamin E oil in.
Finally add 10-12 drops of Lavender essential oil in and pop your roller back on your bottle. Give it a quick shake and you are ready to roll on.
Lavender is one of the best essential oils because it is so versatile. It promotes healthy nails through healing properties and it also protects nails with antibacterial properties. If you don’t have lavender you could always use tea tree oil which has antifungal properties.
How To Use Cuticle Oil:
To use cuticle oil effectively, follow these steps:
- Clean Your Hands and Nails: Start with clean, dry hands. Wash your hands and remove any nail polish if you’re wearing any.
- Apply a Small Amount of Oil: Use the roller to apply a small amount to each cuticle. You only need a drop or two per nail.
- Massage the Oil In: Gently massage the oil into your cuticles and the surrounding skin. This helps the oil absorb and improves circulation.
- Let It Absorb: Allow the oil to sit for a few minutes so your cuticles and nails can absorb the nutrients. You don’t need to rinse it off.
- Use Regularly: For best results, use cuticle oil daily or at least a few times a week, especially after washing your hands or removing nail polish to prevent dryness.
Cuticle oil can also be applied at night before bed to allow for longer absorption.
