The Senate has emphasized that only a majority vote of its 108 members, not its President, Godswill Akpabio, has the authority to reinstate suspended Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central).

Ningi was suspended for three months on March 13, 2024, after alleging budget padding worth N3.7 trillion, which the Senate has denied. Following the Senate’s resumption of plenary, concerns were raised about Ningi’s fate.

Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu stated that Ningi’s suspension resulted from an infraction that warranted disciplinary action. “It was a collective decision of 109 senators, excluding Senator Ningi,” he said.

Adaramodu dismissed the suggestion that Akpabio could unilaterally recall Ningi, emphasizing that he acted as a presiding officer only. “It’s not Senator Ningi versus Senator Akpabio; it’s Senator Ningi versus the rest of the senators,” he added.

He noted that the Senate would consider any plea from Ningi upon his return and make a decision on its merits.

Adaramodu also addressed the issue of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who was suspended for mace theft. He stated that the Senate’s disciplinary authority is distinct from that of other organizations.

“The legislature cannot be deregulated in terms of discipline,” he said. “When a member commits an offense, they must be subject to disciplinary action.”

Adaramodu assured that Ningi’s constituents would not be deprived of representation. “Discipline does not restrict him from advocating for his constituents or attending meetings,” he said. CONTINUE READING
