Senator Abba Patrick Moro, the Senate Minority Leader, has affirmed that the survival of Ambassador Umar Lliya Damagun as the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) represents a triumph for the party. He stressed that this decision was not a defeat for any individual but rather a collective agreement among stakeholders to advance the party’s interests.
Moro’s statement comes amidst speculations that Damagun’s continued leadership, despite calls for his resignation, is a victory for former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. However, Moro clarified that the party’s actions should not be attributed solely to Wike or PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
He emphasized that the paramount concern is the well-being of the PDP as a whole, rather than individual victories or defeats. The decision to retain Damagun as acting National Chairman, he explained, was based on the current economic and political challenges faced by Nigerians. The PDP seeks to provide a viable alternative for the people and thus, it is crucial to maintain stability within the party.
Regarding Wike’s presence at the national caucus meeting, Moro asserted that the minister could not be barred from attending since he has not been formally charged or punished by the party. Should the disciplinary committee find Wike guilty of anti-party activities, he will face appropriate sanctions.
Looking ahead to the upcoming NEC meeting on August 15, Moro highlighted the party’s established succession plan. According to the party constitution, a replacement for the national chairman will be appointed from the same zone as the previous officeholder.
Moro urged party members to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further divide the party. He expressed confidence that the PDP will emerge stronger and more unified to rescue Nigerians from the current hardships inflicted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). CONTINUE READING
