There’s just something so bewitching about sisters and female friendships — the dynamic between polar opposites will always pull you in. That’s what makes it fun to watch Anne and Diana’s connection blossom in Sullivan’s Anne of Green Gables. And sadly, it’s what yanks at our heartstrings each time we cue up that old VHS of Beaches with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. Hopping on that enthralling, nostalgic sisterhood and friendship trope, Practical Magic hit the big screen in October 1998 and cast a spell over everyone who watched it. Since its release 25 years ago, many fans have longed for an update on the Owens sisters. Now, we can confirm that the rumor mill was correct — Practical Magic 2 is in development and a sequel shouldn’t be far in our future!
We all fell head over heels for the Owens family from the very moment Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest’s witchy aunts told Sally and Gillian, “In this house, we have chocolate cake for breakfast.” The familial chemistry! The sorcery! The midnight margaritas! There’s so much to love about this cult classic. So, of course we want to catch up with the gals and see what life has brought them since their (seemingly) last time playing with magic.
Last year, more than a few viral Practical Magic 2 posters started floating around social media. And in early June of this year, Max announced — at midnight — that the original would be available to stream, convincing fans big sequel news was imminent.
It was all confirmed on June 10, with a post from Warner Bros. Pictures. “It’s official! Practical Magic 2 is in development and coming soon,” they wrote, sharing three very cute Practical Magic 2 video memes.
And we only waited 26 years.
From when the movie might be released to which (witch?) stars will be returning, here’s everything we know so far about the long-awaited sequel.
Is Practical Magic 2 really happening?
Yes! We can now confirm it since Warner Bros. has made the announcement. It’s too early to tell when the film might be released, but Max did tease that it’s “coming soon.” Would it be too optimistic to hope for a Halloween 2024 release? The heart wants what the heart wants.
As for the magical-looking announcement “poster” that circulated on social media last year, well, isn’t from an actual film studio. As other sources have pointed out, the Practical Magic 2 graphic seems to have originated from RuPaul’s Drag Race Family, a fan-run Drag Race-devoted Facebook page. It could have been an attempt to generate more chatter and bring in some new members (it happens more than you probably realize).
Of course, it’s impossible to know if the fabricated poster from 2023 inspired filmmakers to realize that we all ~really~ want Practical Magic 2.
Who would return for Practical Magic 2?
The Owens sisters are back, baby. In June, Nicole Kidman told People, “Yes, I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this. [We] found a way in.”
So, Kidman will presumably reprise her role as Gillian Owens, and Sandra Bullock will slide back into the role of her sister, Sally Owens. This tracks, considering they’ve expressed nothing but love and good memories in older interviews about their time filming the ‘90s classic.
If we’re lucky, we could expect the return of practically everyone from the original cast, even if it’s just a cameo. After all, Practical Magic’s adult cast and most of the daughters are still active in Hollywood. That includes:
- Stockard Channing (Aunt Frances)
- Dianne Wiest (Aunt Jet)
- Aidan Quinn (Gary Hallet)
- Evan Rachel Wood (Kylie)
- Margo Martindale (Linda)
- Chloe Webb (Carla)
Camilla Bella, who played young Sally, and Lora Anne Criswell, who played young Gillian, are both still active in Hollywood but may not be in the sequel simply because their characters have grown up (and so have they).
Goran Visnjic, who played Jimmy Angelov, and Mark Feuerstein, who played Michael, both died in the original movie. So, at most, fans can hope for some flashbacks.
Alexandra Artrip, who played Sally’s younger daughter Antonia, might be the original cast member least likely to show up. The child actor enjoyed a few roles but has since left Hollywood and works in sales. However, she may be willing to return if the part felt special enough.
What story would Practical Magic 2 tell?
While there’s no way to know for sure what Practical Magic 2 will be about, you should know that the story has already been written!
For those who don’t remember (or were too young to know), the 1998 film is based on a book. Written by Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic is the first in a quartet of books that follows the oh-so-magical Owens family. The next three books are The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, and The Book of Magic. The synopsis written to accompany the seemingly fake Practical Magic 2 movie poster follows the plot of The Book of Magic almost perfectly. Stating, “When Sally’s granddaughter turns 16, all hell breaks loose when an ancient family curse finally descends. Tracking down the source to a long-forgotten Owens family coven, the six Owens women must travel across the country if they have any hope of saving the future of their family.”
It sounds lovely — but it’s also important to remember that the original movie and the original book were quite different from each other.
Is there a Practical Magic 2 trailer?
Not yet. Since the streamer has only just announced that the film is in development, a timeline for theatrical release hasn’t been given. Typically, a trailer drops when a studio is ready to announce a movie’s release date.
However, if Max conjures up a 2024 release date, a trailer would likely drop this summer. In the more probable case that the film releases in 2025, fans would probably get a trailer this fall.
