Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former Ogun governorship aspirant, has expressed concern over the treatment of former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Yahaya Bello under the Tinubu administration. He believes it violates an unwritten understanding between Yorubas and the northern region.

Showunmi noted that El-Rufai and Bello played a crucial role in Tinubu’s election victory in 2023, supporting him against Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the north. However, since then, they have faced political challenges.

He highlighted the humiliation of El-Rufai during a Senate clearance and the embarrassment faced by Bello. According to Showunmi, these actions constitute betrayal and undermine the reputation of Yorubas as a people who honor their commitments.

He expressed concern that the actions of those around Tinubu are minimizing the contributions of those who helped him achieve the presidency. He questioned whether Tinubu intends to seek a second term and emphasized the importance of sharing power and ensuring that those who contribute feel protected.

Showunmi also reminded Tinubu of the unresolved issues between Yorubas and Igbos, which have been partially addressed through the efforts of Obasanjo, Adebanjo, and himself. He warned that breaking the understanding with the north could have serious consequences for the Yoruba race.

Showunmi urged Tinubu to reconsider his approach towards his supporters and to respect the long-standing relationship between Yorubas and the northern region. CONTINUE READING
