Stevie Nicks has released a topical new single titled “The Lighthouse.” She wrote the song in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. The track arrives with a music video featuring footage from a number of women’s marches and abortion rights rallies, as well as a fleet of protesters carrying signs with slogans like “Keep Abortion Legal” and “Get Mad” as Nicks leads them in a march on the beach. “I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned,” Nicks said of “The Lighthouse in press materials. She continued:
It seemed like overnight, people were saying “what can we, as a collective force, do about this….” For me, it was to write a song. It took a while because I was on the road. Then early one morning I was watching the news on TV and a certain newscaster said something that felt like she was talking to me ~ explaining what the loss of Roe v Wade would come to mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.
That was September 6, 2022. I have been working on it ever since. I have often said to myself, “This may be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters ~ and the men that love them.”
This is an anthem.
Nicks wrote “The Lighthouse” with Magnus Birgersson and Vincent Villuis. She co-produced it with Dave Cobb and Sheryl Crow, the latter of whom also plays bass and guitar on the track.
Nicks was recently announced as the musical guest for the October 12 episode of Saturday Night Live, which will be hosted by Ariana Grande. The evening will mark Nicks’ first performance on the show since 1983.
