Bowen, 26, couldn’t hide his disappointment

Bowen was handed a start by boss Gareth Southgate, as he continued his quest to make the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024.

With one minute of normal time to spare, Bowen was teed up in the box by James Maddison.

He sent a shot goalward, only for it to somehow be blocked by Konsa on the line.

Harry Kane was able to convert the rebound, but Bowen couldn’t hide his dismay at being denied.

The forward slumped with his hands on his knees even after Kane’s finish.

Interviewed by Channel 4 after the game, Bowen appeared to have shaken off his disappointment.

But fans on social media were still disappointed on his behalf.

One dramatically wrote: “I hope Bowen takes a pair of scissors to Konsa’s passport for that.”

While a second moaned: “Konsa is having an absolute laugh. Hindered Bowen all night then he manages to stop his shot on the line. What a joke.”

A third cried: “Konsa denying Bowen his first England goal is sickening.”

And another added: “Konsa has sabotaged Bowen all night and now costs him a goal.”

Having missed out on the 2022 World Cup after being cut from the provisional squad, Bowen was asked by Sky Sports if he is a better player and stronger person for that experience.

He replied: “I don’t know if I’m better now, people will probably tell me different.

“I’m more mature as a player and that comes with age, the games that you play, confidence from each game that you play.

“And every opportunity that you get here I think you gain confidence from it.”

England take on Iceland on Friday, with Southgate set to cut seven players from his provisional 33-man squad on Saturday.
