The United States is contemplating providing Ukraine with Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) with a range of up to 200 miles, potentially escalating tensions with Russia.

Ukraine has received several batches of ATACMS, with an initial delivery of 20 M39s last fall and eight more in March. However, the shorter-range versions were supplied due to US concerns about escalation.

Senior Democrat Mark Warner has hinted that the US may send Ukraine the longer-range missiles as part of a new military aid package approved by Congress. The bill includes funding for ATACMS.

ATACMS are considered a “game changer” in the war due to their ability to strike targets deep within Russian territory. This would force Russia to move its troops and supplies further from the front lines.

ATACMS are surface-to-surface missiles that can hit targets 155 miles away in five minutes, faster than other long-range missiles. They also have maneuverability capabilities during flight.

ATACMS are believed to have been used in the recent attack on the Dzhankoy airfield in Crimea, destroying multiple S-400 missile launchers.

The potential supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine has raised concerns among some Republicans, with 112 voting against the aid package. The move could further escalate tensions between the US and Russia, potentially bringing the conflict closer to a broader confrontation. CONTINUE READING
